Collard greens are healthy, delicious, and easy to make. In fact, there are five different ways you can prepare this food. First, choose leaves that are firm in texture and have a deep green hue. Rinse them and let them soak in water for about 10 minutes. Shake the water off, pat the leaves dry, and cut off the stems. Then, choose your favorite method to make perfect collard greens!
Sauté or Fry
One option is to Sauté collard greens. If you chose this method, stack the leaves, roll them lengthwise, and cut the roll into 1-inch pieces. Using a skillet, heat oil and garlic. Toss the greens into the skillet. Sauté them until they’re slightly wilted but before they lose their color. Drizzle on a bit of balsamic vinegar, and you’re good to go.
Frying collard greens is easier than you may think! Simply fry some bacon over medium heat. Remove the cooked bacon, and then use the same (unwashed) pan for collard greens and onions. Add water or broth and your chosen seasonings, and cook for a minimum of 15 minutes. Drain the liquid, add some apple cider vinegar, and enjoy.
Cook, Simmer, and Blanch
To cook collard greens, chop them and place them in a slow cooker. Add broth, smoked meat, onion, brown sugar, salt, pepper, and apple cider vinegar. Cook on low for roughly 8 hours.
If you prefer to simmer your collard greens, pour water or broth, meat, and seasoning into a large stockpot. Allow it to simmer for roughly 1 hour. Next, stack the leaves together, roll them lengthwise, and cut the roll into 1-inch pieces. Put greens and butter in the pot, and leave it to simmer for roughly 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
Blanching collard greens is the simplest method of all. Just cook the leaves in a pot of boiling, salted water for roughly 10 minutes. Drain, and place the leaves in cold water. Drain again, and get ready to eat!
